We arrived in Lyon yesterday evening. Lyon is about 400 miles south of Paris and the journey took just under two hours. Eat your heart out HS2. We stayed in a boutique hotel near the station which means there was a double bed with about two feet of space between it and the walls. Perfectly adequate though and they did a great breakfast. The hotel also had a boutique lift. The smallest one I’ve ever been in.

We got the TB11 bus to the old part of the city which is a UNESCO Heritage Site with a 2,000+ year old chapel on the top of a mount with a not quite so ancient cathedral next to it.

We decided to walk back to the station to get some practice in and went via the Roman amphitheatre.

What’s always striking about French towns is the prevalence of specialist shops selling local products some going to great lengths to draw you in.

Here’s a map for the records. Our hotel was near the SNCF logo (right) and the Fourvière and Théâtres Romain are to the left.

We are now waiting to board the 14:35 train to Barcelona. This is a five-hour trip. Looking forward to taking over some of the communications from Jane as we move into Spanish speaking territory.
