Yes! I explain how I’ve done it below.
Bike Friday sell a pair of bike boxes to allow you to pack up you Family Tandem and there is a video to show you how to do this here. However, these bags are very expensive and are not available in the UK so I thought I’d see if I could get the tandem into a single standard bike box. I bought a badly damaged B&W bike box on eBay for £25 and repaired the cracks with fibreglass and bought a replacement wheel. Today it was time to test it out.
The rear part of the frame went in first with the pedals removed but without removing the wheel. Then the front of the tandem went in without the wheel but with the handlebar post detached without disturbing the cables.
Next the front wheel went in. I needed to find a spot where it added the least height and at this point I had to remove the front mudguard. Finally the bike parts I’d had to remove went in in towelling bags. I then put the straps in place. I didn’t put any bike parts in the lid of the case and just used those straps to hold the protective foam in place.
Then I was able to shut the lid.
We can now travel with our Family Tandem in the back of our small car.
Nice job. Photos are always helpful.
